The Die-Fi Experiment by M.R. Tapia – Book Review

The Die-Fi Experiment
Author: M.R. Tapia
Genres: Horror, Adult

His lips move, but there is no audio or subtitles. But I know what he said, in layman's terms, he told me, "Welcome to Hell."

The Die-Fi Experiment by M. R. Tapia is a gruesome, grotesque, grim, and absolutely horrifying novella! I don't know how I made it till the end!

The novella revolves around Marie and her husband who visit Tokyo for a much-needed honeymoon but do not tell anyone where they are going and promise not to post any pictures on social media, so that everything remains private until their return. There, Marie comes across a game, involving a maze, where the winner will be a given the new iPhone X.

Little does Marie know that the so-called game is but a sham. The couple wakes up in the middle of a gameshow of horrors, that is broadcast to the world via social media, and where the winner, well they get to fight for their life against their spouse in the end!

The book begins with a strong opening: "Never in my most horrific nightmare would I have dreamt I'd be cheering on my own executioner."

A 10-chapter novella, where each chapter is written with a hashtag (#chapterone), The Die-Fi Experiment's chapters alternate between the present dilemma at the gameshow and how events played up until the moment they woke up to find themselves inside the game. This alternation acts as a much-needed relief for the reader.

Inside, each chapter includes other hashtags, descriptions of the newly-added Facebook reactions and how the hearts, likes, and angry emoticons fly across the screen.

"The screen went crazy with its own blue hands holding their still attached thumbs up, floating across the screen like balloons."

The novel is deeply-tied to current social media and the people who use it, although it takes on a much more grim view of the world, which is displayed as a group of sadists.

While reading The Die-Fi Experiment, I couldn't help but look at social media with a different, slightly scared, view.

“I would like to welcome the world to The Die-Fi Experiment. Please join us in the fun that is the deterioration of the world by means of social media.”

There were some beautiful images throughout the book, along with descriptions and quotes. I liked the narrator's tone, as he includes bits and pieces of information throughout.

If you're a parent, don't read Tapia's The Die-Fi Experiment. Trust me, you'll ban your children from social media for life! Otherwise, I highly recommend it.

"The world watches excitedly, begging for our torture. We have slowly evolved to indulge in the misfortune of others."

Overall rating: 5 stars

Note: There is a significant amount of violence and lots of blood and torture.

Note II: I got a free copy of The Die-Fi Experiment from its author M.R. Tapia in exchange for an honest review.

Mine for a Day by Delaney Cameron - Excerpt + Giveaway

Mine for a Day by Delaney Cameron

Growing up in the shadow of three beautiful sisters isn’t easy when you’re average. Not that anyone in Violet’s family ever mentions it, but it’s pointed out to her again and again by everyone else. Guys don’t mind talking to her or hanging out with her, but she doesn’t make the cut as girlfriend material. She compensates for her lack of social life by staying busy. Holding down two jobs and working on her master’s degree is a decent enough smokescreen. What most people don’t realize is that her sensible, no-nonsense exterior hides the heart of a hopeless romantic. More than anything, Violet wants to love and to be loved.

There was a time when Jackson looked forward to getting married and having a family, but all that ended his senior year of college. Because of the selfish actions of others, he had to walk away from someone he cared deeply about. Disillusioned and heartbroken, he resolved never to risk falling in love again. This means keeping his relationships short in length and light on commitment. As such, they never come close to touching his heart. This system works flawlessly until he meets Violet; someone who reminds him of what he used to be, and who makes him question whether he really is better off without love.

Praise for the Book

A "chance" meeting between Jackson and Violet leads them to a relationship that frees them from their hurting hearts and to a love that makes for a life worth living. Loved the line "The seemingly insignificant things are never unimportant, and chance meetings have little to do with chance."

A most enjoyable romance from Delaney Cameron! Easily one of my favorite authors. I especially like how she shows the development of the relationship for our hero & heroine. A sweet, sweet romance.

A beautiful story of unexpected love.

Excerpt from Mine for a Day by Delaney Cameron

One minute Violet was listening to her newest audiobook; the next she was staring in horror at the busted grille and sagging bumper of a pearly-white Land Rover.
“I’m so sorry,” she said to the serious-looking man walking toward her. “I can’t think how it happened.”
“Can’t you?” his deep voice drawled. “Maybe I can help you figure it out. Were you texting your boyfriend?”
She couldn’t help smiling at his question. The fact that she didn’t have a boyfriend had been a popular topic over the Memorial Day weekend. If she hadn’t been aware of the direness of this situation before, she had no doubts about it now. “No, I wasn’t. Would you like to check my phone?”
He ignored her attempt at humor, choosing instead to inspect the damage to their respective vehicles. The situation reminded her of a show she’d seen recently where a dating expert illustrated different ways to meet men. Running into their car had been one of the more humorous examples. Violet couldn’t have executed this plan any better if she tried, nor could she complain about the result.
The man crouching next to her ten-year-old Fiat was tall enough to make even her feel short. That didn’t happen often when you were five-eleven. His striped polo shirt and jeans fit his wide shoulders and narrow hips like a glove. Costa sunglasses rested in his light brown hair, and his eyes were the color of polished steel. In the words of her Aunt Anita, he was the cat’s meow.
He rose to his feet, dusting off his hands. “This isn’t your first rodeo, is it?”
“Actually, it is. With the exception of today, the rest of those scratches and dents were there when I inherited Leonie.”
For the first time since he stepped out of his vehicle something close to humor entered his handsome face. “In other words, you probably won’t bother to have it, I mean Leonie, repaired.”
Her lips twitched at the correction. “That’s right. Shouldn’t we be calling the police?”
“I don’t think that’s necessary. I’ve got a friend who owns a body shop.”
She reached into her purse. “Let me give you my insurance information.”
“Don’t worry about it,” he said, turning to walk away.
“But it’s my fault. I should have been paying attention.”
He stopped and glanced over his shoulder, an attractive grin forming on his lips. “I agree, but there’s no point in raising your insurance rates over what amounts to a fender bender. Just watch where you’re going from now on. The owner of the next car you back into might not be so distracted by that pretty smile of yours.”
Distracted by her pretty smile? Where had that come from? He’d gone from ice cold to oozing charm in ten seconds. Some people just couldn’t make up their minds.

After giving him a decent head start, Violet left the rest area. Her clean accident record was still intact, but only because of Mr. Wonderful’s kindness. If she hadn’t been so tired from three days of nonstop activity, she might not have done such a stupid thing.
From the moment she arrived at Millicent’s house in Chattanooga on Friday afternoon, she’d been swept up in all the activities of a reunion weekend with a few of her college friends. This included several late-night sessions where everyone provided details about the current man in their life. Violet’s contribution had been sadly lacking.
A quick glance at her phone confirmed that she wouldn’t roll into Columbus until almost ten. She would have been further along if she hadn’t stopped in Dalton. The sight of a Carter’s outlet store had been too much of atemptation to pass up. She’d spent a happy hour browsing the racks and shelves buying baby clothes for her nephew Micah and her friend Holly’s daughter Rebecca.
Hopefully Rachel remembered to feed Bluebell. Her best friend and roommate had become increasingly absentminded since she met Pierre, an exchange student from France. Not that Violet could blame her. If she hada guy whispering sweet nothings in French into her ear, she’d walk around with her head in the clouds, too.
A sigh escaped her lips. Her own Prince Charming didn’t seem to be in any hurry to make an appearance. Her dating life had gone from a dribble to a dry creek bed. She hadn’t given up on finding love, but she was starting to wonder if love had given up on her.

About Author Delaney Cameron

I'm a Georgia girl at heart if not by birth. I love to read, watch college football, and spend time with my husband. I'm a hopeless romantic so there will always be a happily ever after in my stories. I also like to write about second chances because love doesn't always work out the first time.

My books are sweet romances set in both contemporary and regency settings featuring stories about the journey to love, from that first meeting to the point where two people know their hearts are no longer their own. My characters aren't perfect. They make mistakes and have faults like the rest of us. They learn the sometimes painful truth that the path to love isn't always smooth, but it's a road worth traveling.

As they work together, Morgan tries to keep her emotional distance but time and off-the-charts chemistry soon turn a childhood friendship into a blossoming romance.

Unfortunately, just when their relationship develops into something deeper, an unexpected crisis re-opens her family’s old wounds and the blame is on Dallas once again. Will Morgan’s sadness and fear pull them apart, or make her realize Dallas has always been her heart’s true safe harbor?

Love Notes in Christmas Falls by Beth Labonte

CHARACTER GUEST POST – MISTY DAWN SPEAKS

Hello. Have you come for a reading?
Yes, I’m Misty Dawn. No doubt you’ve heard of me.  Hollywood’s famed psychic to the stars.  And, no, I don’t read cards or stare into crystal balls.  Those are props for amateurs.  People who will take your money and promise to look into your future or fix your love life for a fee.  I’m the real thing.
Please, take a seat and let me get a look at you.
Would you like some tea?
Oh, don’t worry, there’s nothing in it. I am fond of mixing in my herbs, and I have been known to do a concoction or two–strictly for medicinal purposes mind you–but not today. And while I’m on the subject, I don’t read tea leaves either. But I do find it clears the mind...and in today’s world, well...we’re all so cluttered with thought.
Ah! But I digress.  I do tend to go on and on.
So, if you’ll allow me, I’ll pour myself a cup and share with you a little about who I am and how I came to meet Carol Childs.
To start with, this talent I have for reading people and looking into the future, is a gift.  I didn’t always understand it, but over time I realized I was able to look into people and see what others can’t. For years I was everywhere in Hollywood. TV. Radio. Stars invited me to their homes. A former president’s wife called regularly, and on more than one occasion the FBI asked me to consult on difficult cases.
I’ve had a very unusual life.  I live in California now, a state I gravitated to as a young woman, following a group of rainbow people. Hippies from the sixties, who came west to promote peace and love. I came in my yellow Volkswagen bus painted with flowers and peace symbols selling love potions. I still have the bus, but I don’t drive or shouldn’t anyway.
What’s that? You wonder how old I am?
A lady never tells. But certainly looking at me with my mane of grey hair and less than svelte figure, you’ve figured it out.  I’m well beyond the age of consent, and while I shuffle more than walk these days due to my arthritis, I’m not yet ready to kick the bucket. Which is a problem.
Why?
Because, much as I could see into the future for others, I neglected to prepare for my own. Yes, I know that must sound unusual, but misfortune sidetracked me. I’ve out lives my assets. My own physical strengths, my eyesight including that of my psychic vision has clouded with age.  As has my failing memory.
But fortunately, I did remember Carol.  We met several years ago while working on a case. I suppose you could say it was destiny that brought us together.  In truth, it was an empty gas tank.  I was headed out of town. I don’t remember where, only that when I realized I was running low on fuel, I got off the freeway, and ended up parked in front of Carol’s house.
It was Bossy Pants, my Calico cat sitting next to you on the couch, who recognized the neighborhood.
Yes, she’s lovely, isn’t she? But quite the wanderer. When I opened the door of my van, she scedattled. Disappeared. Poof! Just like that. Fortunately, I heard her meowing and found her on Carol’s patio. Only to lose her again when she scampered through one of the open French Doors over there by the kitchen.
So, here I am.  Living with Carol.  I try to help out where I can. The woman’s triple busy.  Trying to do it all. Big time job as a reporter for a talk radio station with two growing kids and no time for romance.  My specialty.  What a shame.
But, I know you didn’t come just to hear about that. You’d like a reading perhaps?
Is that a yes?
Well, then...let me share with you this.  I sense you’re a reader. You enjoy finding new mysteries, and I see a new book in your future. Room For Doubt, Carol Childs’ latest mystery.  But be careful.  I must warn you, it will keep you up at night.

For Nadaness In Motion's stop on the blog tour, I'm featuring a Character Guest Post by Mary Kennedy, author of A DEADLY FUNDRAISER, the Talk Radio Mysteries

"LIFE IS FULL OF SURPRISES

Writing as Dr. Maggie Walsh

As a psychologist, I should know that life is full of surprises. When I closed up my Manhattan practice and moved to sunny south Florida to host a radio talk show, I took a leap of faith.  It all came about quite by chance. I read an ad posted by the manager of WYME Radio, who was looking for a daytime talk show host. I auditioned, got the job and it was a hoot.

But I was in for another surprise right off the bat. One of my first guests, a self-styled guru, was murdered right after he appeared on my show. And worst of all, my dear roommate Lark was a suspect. So I had to leap in and try to solve the crime, didn’t I? You can read about the guru and his untimely demise in DEAD AIR.

Another surprise: I found I had a knack for solving murders!  When my mother (a wannabe actress) landed a bit part in a film being shot in south Florida, a movie star was killed on the set. Once again, Mom and I, along with my handsome detective boyfriend, Rafe Martino, leapt into action to find the murderer. This happened in REEL MURDER.

When a clever psychic came to town, she developed quite a following and tried to hijack my radio show. I had to solve the murder and save my job—no easy task.  You can read all about the outcome in STAY TUNED FOR MURDER.

Finally, a glitzy fundraiser at a south Florida mansion sounded like fun. I never expected to stumble over a dead body. Luckily Mom and my producer, Vera Mae, were there to help me look for the killer.

So it’s all been a surprising and wonderful journey with many more books to come! Hope you enjoy the Talk Radio series as much as I enjoy writing it.
