Exclusive interview with E.E. Bertram, author of November Fox

It gives me great pleasure to feature author E.E. Bertram with what I'm sure you'll agree is a different kind of book/novel. A little bit about the author:

Q: Who are your favourite writers/authors?

EE: When I'm in a mood to relax, I’ve always loved Paulo Coelho as he finds a lovely mix between wisdom, mysticism and easy storytelling. Yet, I more often enjoy reading books where I learn about the brain, science, consciousness, the cosmos and philosophy. I have to admit one of my all-time favourites was Eckhart Tolle’s The Power of Now. I would love to meet him as I find his wisdom so logical, and being in the presence of someone who is so mindful and conscious, I’m sure would be an interesting and inspiring experience.

Q: Is November Fox your first novel? Have you been published elsewhere before?

EE: November Fox is my first novel. I've been writing songs since I was a child and I studied Music Composition at university. Yet before this book, the longest things I had written were an album of songs. I find there are quite a lot of similarities between song writing and book writing, as far as form of the overall structure is concerned. Yet it is quite a different art form. My travels as a touring and recording singer-songwriter around the world have influenced the content of writing. So the song writing has been complementary to the creation of the book in more ways than one.

Q: What other genres would you like to experiment with in the future?

EE: Like with my song writing, I’m a little unconventional. I don’t set out with a genre in mind. I just allow the story to flow and be written, and then afterwards see what genre it fits into. I hadn’t even heard of Visionary Fiction, or Metaphysical or New Adult until after I had written the book. It was my first editor that told me I am a Visionary Fiction author. I have sneaky suspicion though, with my intention for book two, it may fall into a crossover of New Adult Romance/Magic Realism/ Metaphysical.

Speaking of November Fox

Q: How many books are you planning for the series?

EE: At least three, yet there may be more. I have a an overall plan for three, yet depending on how I feel and how the characters feel in number three, we will see what should come next.

Q: What first inspired you to write November Fox?

EE: As I mentioned I’ve always been a songwriter, yet writing my first novel was driven by a deeper yearning. I felt a strong desire to do my part in inspiring the next generation of readers to find their purpose in life and ask deeper questions. Because we are living in a time of overwhelming media saturation, some people seem to be losing touch with themselves and nature. I wrote November Fox to inspire people to listen to their inner voices and follow their calling, amidst the cacophony of the digital age. Yet I housed these ideas and ideals in a scifi/fantasy, and added interactive Augmented Reality layers as I love using technology creatively. This element also serves to aptly deepen the story to represent the layered nature of human consciousness.

Q: I like the idea of 'imagination and positive thinking to remake herself and her world', can you elaborate more that? How does positive thinking drive the novel forward?

EE: Yes, I’m a big believer in creating your own reality, the law of attraction and the power of intention. A lot of what I have learnt about such subjects have been through my lucid dreams, where the power to manifest desired outcomes is based on your ability to be clear and open. November Fox has many obstacles to overcome to understand the workings of the teleporting cube “Joy” and over time, it becomes evident that it is through the “Feedback Loop” of positive thinking, that she can progress. There is a discussion in a chapter with The Now Tree, where the tree explains how the feedback loop works.

Q: Does the novel have any romance in it?

EE: Short answer is yes, some. Although I don’t wish to give it away so I won’t tell you between who. What I will say is there will be more romance in book 2.

Q: Can you explain to readers what is the metaphysical aspect of the novel (and/or provide an example)?

EE: Wikipedia explains the topic perfectly in the following description; Metaphysics is a branch of philosophy investigating the fundamental nature of being and the world that encompasses it. Metaphysics attempts to answer two basic questions:

1. Ultimately, what is there?

2. What is it like?

Much of November Fox is narrated from The Architect. He is an other-worldly entity that creates our world of form. He is extremely philosophical and asks many metaphysical questions as he yearns to understand the nature of reality. His only “World of Form” experience has been in creating it and observing/feeling it through November Fox, so through his intrigue and fascination, readers are also asked to re-examine their pre-conceptions of “what is.”

The Writing Process

Q: You mentioned that the book has been "five years in the making", why did it take so long for this book to come together?

EE: Yes, well just the text alone took a long time, as I had to re-write it many times as I was learning the craft of writing as I went. As soon as I’d finished writing a draft, I learnt something else about writing and had to go back to the manuscript and implement it.

Then came the digital elements of the book, the Augmented reality layers. These took a long time as well, as there are 43 videos as well as an album and an EP of music, and before any of this came the planning which was six months as well. Also there was the Kickstarter campaign, as I was doing it all myself it just took quite a while. I am quite sure the next book in the series will take a quarter of the time as I have learnt so much along the way.

Q: What was the hardest thing about writing November Fox?

EE: The hardest part is the endurance required to stick at it, year after year until the art form is ready for the world. Living a somewhat hermit lifestyle for so long was also quite tough. There were many days and weeks and months where I hardly saw any friends or left the comfort of my dressing gown. It's such a cathartic and intense experience to write a book and I compounded my workload by deciding to have the augmented reality components as well as connected music project. The stamina required was the hardest part.

Q: How much sci-fi goes into the novel? And did you have difficulty in not going over the top with the sci-fi element?

EE: There are four or so chapters set in the future at a time where AI [artificial intelligence] are almost like humans. And there are also a few parts in the book about quantum physics and other fascinating science-based ideas. The whole framework structure of how the cube and the levels work is based on one of my own theories, so it is my own experiential science turned into fiction.

I didn’t have difficulty not going over the top as I wanted the novel to remain within plausible possibilities. That is actually why I cut out four chapters for the second edition. I felt like those chapters, although interesting in their own way, took the story one step too far. So I’m calling the first limited edition hardback, the director's cut.

Q: The Augmented reality images are in ebook form only or print as well? (or November Fox only an ebook)?

EE: The Augmented Reality Images work best with the Print editions of the book as you can lay the book flat on the table and use your tablet or phone to access the interactive 3D elements, yet if you have two devices, one for the ebook and another for the Augmented reality, it also works with the ebook.

Today I'm featuring author Vicki Vass with a Guest Post on writing her Antique Hunters' Mystery Series. The post also includes a giveaway at the end.

Blurring the Lines between Reality and Fiction by Vicki Vass

Often I write in the dark. I don’t mean without lights on but without knowing where the story is going. It’s very important to listen to the voices in your head. The characters tell the story, I just write it down. For me, it began with my antique hunting excursions with my two best friends, Anne and CC.

I began chronicling our adventures but that story took a strange twist. They stumbled upon a murder not in real life but within the pages. Those adventures are told in the first book of the series, Murder by the Spoonful, a finalist in the Mystery & Mayhem contest.

Since then, I have written three more books in the series, Pickin’ Murder, Killer Finds and most recently, Key to a Murder. Each one started with an idea from my shared adventures with the real-life antique hunters and the stories evolved from there.

It is a fine line between fiction and nonfiction. The real Anne is a wealth of knowledge for all things antique and is very opinionated. I find the fictional Anne repeating some of the catchphrases spoken by the real Anne. As each new story develops, I have to stop to remember if I am writing about the real Anne or the fictional Anne. As each new book came along, the line became thinner and thinner until they morphed into one Anne – Anne Hillstrom, the protagonist of all the stories. She is a bit full of herself, indulgent in her love of fine things, antiques and food, constantly struggling with her diet and her bank account but her generosity and compassion are perhaps her most compelling traits.

Along the way she is accompanied by her best friend, CC, a know-it-all journalist who loves to share her knowledge with all who will listen. As any good friends do, they bicker and don’t always agree but their friendship is steeped with admiration and love and of course, antiques.

Anne and CC take readers along with them on their adventures, sharing their knowledge of antiques, how to authenticate items, where to find them and how to price them. Along with antiquing tips, CC entices readers with her home-grown recipes and gardening tips, all of which help them dust off clues to catch those pesky murderers. After all, a cozy is not a mystery without a murder.

I started writing cozies because of my love of mysteries. When I was younger, I spent days reading Nancy Drew, Vicki Barr and Cherry Ames stories. I then graduated to the works of Agatha Christie. As a journalist for more than 24 years, I’ve written for the Chicago Tribune and traveled the world for World Relief. I found that my journalistic eye helps me create a realistic backdrop for the adventures of the antique hunters.

My love of history, instilled in me by my father, a history professor; is entwined in all the stories. I like to blur the lines between reality and fiction. Whether it’s Paul Revere, Georges Seurat or the Great Chicago Fire, you have to stop and ask yourself: Did this happen? Could it happen? To me, that makes interesting storytelling.

Rest in Peace on Your Birthday

It is the 7^th of November again. A day etched in memory; a forgotten birthday, one that brings me tears every year, clenching my heart in remembrance.

Already my eyes are watery, I miss you. I've missed you and I can't stop. I don't want to, but I wonder how others carry on without their loved one, how do they stop the tears?

I remember your bright lipsticks, and how my dad didn't like it when I used yours or played with them.

I remember your perfume, well sort of. I remember it wasn't fruity or with vanilla like the ones we get these days. Yours was what my mother called "heavy". It was yours. It defined you. It was etched in your scent.

I remember when you used to stay over at our place, I always wanted you to sleep next to me and I hated it when you had to leave. When you did, I'd come home from school and smell the pillows, till I had sniffed your scent away entirely.

The year after you died, I started university and it was so close to your home. But the house was closed and you weren't there. I wished you were alive so I can stay over and may take care of you or at least hold you tight.

I remember sleeping on your sick bed towards the end.

Life's not been easy; it never is. But I still wish you were here. I wanted to share my successes with you, my ups and downs.

I wish… but I can only remember.

Mama glanced from Hannah to Rachel. “I’ve fixed you a place in my sewing room. Your clothes and things are already there.”

Not even allowed to return to her former room? Scooping up her valise, she turned and fled to the sewing room. “Fine. At least I’ll have privacy.”

Patrick followed and caught up with her before she closed the door. “Dahlia and I’ve been scouring our brains since I learned of our parents’ plan. I may have a solution.” He handed her a folded newspaper page with one advertisement circled. “What do you think?”

Rachel read the item:

“Young women of good character desiring to go west for the purpose of marriage may apply for an interview between ten and four o’clock in the afternoon from April 5th to 10th at the Grand Hotel, Richmond, care of Mrs. Lydia Harrison.”

“Good character? This Mrs. Lydia Harrison might not agree I qualify.” She reread the item as she mulled over the implications. “Regardless, I’ll go see Mrs. Harrison at ten tomorrow.” She hugged Patrick. “I knew I could count on you, dear brother.”

“You’ll have to thank Dahlia for that advertisement. It wasn’t in the parts of the paper I read.”

All her plans for the future had changed. Instead of welcome from her family, she was ostracized by all but her brother. In her head, she saw the wisdom of her father’s edict. In her heart, she was far too crushed for reason. She wouldn’t stay a second longer than necessary to find a solution.

Patrick leaned a shoulder against the door jamb. “I’ll take off work again to go with you and be certain this woman isn’t a con artist soliciting young women for objectionable purposes.”

Rachel was able to force a smile though her heart had frozen solid. “No, Patrick, thank you for coming for me and for being the same fine man I remember, but I should do this alone. The ad says ‘for the purpose of marriage’ and I’ll be sure of the details before I commit—if she even chooses me.”

“At least let me give you a few dollars to pay cab fare there and back and enough to buy lunch if you’re out then.” He opened his wallet and removed several bills, which he pressed into her hand.

She gazed at the amount. “Ten dollars? Patrick, this is too much.”

He backed away as he held his hands palm facing her. “You don’t know what expenses you’ll have. I’ll worry enough without thinking you have no resources.”

She dropped the cash into her purse. “Thank you. You’re the dearest brother who ever lived.”

His cheeky grin cheered her. “Honesty compels me to modestly agree with you.”

Raven's Peak by Lincoln Cole - Book Review

Raven's Peak by Lincoln Cole is a fast-paced paranormal action thriller. It was also quite scary in places, and were it a movie with a bit of sound effects, it would definitely be creepy. It is the first instalment in the World on Fire series.

The novel opens with a lengthy but action-filled prologue where we are introduced to Abigail, a demon hunter, who was out on a mission but had been possessed by the demon she, along with two others, was sent to destroy. Her mentor, Arthur goes to rescue her and is instead taken by the demon after a bone-breaking supernatural fight in a church.

Though long, the prologue is eventful and exciting.

"What stood before Arthur was only the shell of the girl he loved. Something else was in control. He could feel the rage and hatred emanating from Abigail's lithe body. Her skin was covered in a heat rash, her flesh barely containing the demonic presence within."

After the prologue, the novel begins five months after the events at the church, where we meet Haatim, a theology graduate who recently lost his sister to cancer and returned to the US from India, feeling angry at his father and God. He is given a kind of freelance job, by a man named George, to take pictures of Abigail, who is seen following George.

From there, things progress as Haatim is thrust into the supernatural world of which he had no knowledge. Abigail attempts – at first – to withhold information regarding Haatim's father, who is a member of the Council that sanctions the missions against the demons.

The duo then flees from otherworldly creatures trying to kill or capture them. Abigail, secretly, tries to find out more about the demon that took Arthur and seeks to save him.

"They could feel the supernatural presence, the sheer wrongness of it, as easily as he could. Even the forest could sense something was amiss."

Abigail is tasked to go to Raven's Peak after rumours that there might be a minor demon in the area. From there, things take a whole new level of surprising and scary for both the demon hunter and Haatim.

Character development in the novel is significant for both Abigail and Haatim. Abigail is also a sarcastic though often serious character, making her interactions with Haatim quite funny, especially since he is new to the whole supernatural scene.

"I thought you said I wasn't worth anything to them without the pictures."

"I didn't think you were," she said. "Turns out, you're worth a whole hell of a lot."

The only things that can be said are that I felt that the cover did not reflect the content of the novel, and that I would have liked a small explanation as to how demons move if they are not possessing a body - from a fictional perspective.

Raven's Peak had many scary parts, some nearly had me biting my nails with suspense, but overall it wasn't horrifying. The pace is very quick, even the longer chapters slip by and you're hungry for more.

"What happens when I don't come back? When I become the new threat and you have no one else to send?"

Overall rating: 4.5 stars.

            He grunted and hefted the axe onto his muscle bound shoulder.

            The next room looked like a circus gone bad. Ripped red and white stripped fabric half covered the walls and drooped from the ceiling. A popcorn machine with a head inside the glass sat in a corner. A demented calliope song was just audible over the screams of the girls in the room in front of me. And there were clowns.

            Two of them.

            I hate clowns. That’s not strong enough. I abhor clowns. Clowns chill my blood. Clowns turn my normally reliable knees to the consistency of the tomato aspic the chef at the club serves at ladies’ lunches in the summertime. I. Despise. Clowns. And those are the friendly ones at the circus who wear big shoes and cram into tiny cars.

            Don’t ask why. Some fears are just visceral. Snakes. Spiders. Clowns. Pick your poison.

            These clowns weren’t of the friendly variety. They had pointed teeth. They wore wicked expressions. And, despite the cheery ruffs at their necks, they were the stuff of nightmares.
