Tiffany Shand unveils The Shifter Clans Trilogy + Interview & Excerpt

Today, it gives me great pleasure to feature author Tiffany Shand. I've featured Tiffany before on the blog but through book reviews. Today, Tiffany is answering a few interview questions, introducing me and all readers to her new novella series The Shifter Clans, and providing an excerpt from the series as part of a blog tour for the series.

First, let me introduce you to Tiffany Shand's newest paranormal romance novella series: The Shifter Series

The Alpha’s Daughter
Blurb
After being kidnapped as a child, Christy Daine was sent away from her shifter clan to live among humans. For over a decade she has lived in fear of the people who tried to kill her. Living with her bodyguard, Ronan, the two embark on a secret relationship that could get them both killed.
When her father, the alpha of all the clans demands she return home to marry a man he’s chosen for her, Christy will finally have to face her past and her true nature. Danger lurks around every corner and even Ronan might not be the man she thought he was.
As the alpha’s daughter, can she really choose between the man she loves and the man she is supposed to be with? And who can she really trust?

Alpha Ascending
Blurb
After watching her family be slaughtered by the man chosen to be the next alpha, Christy has to turn to the only people left on the island for help. The outsiders are considered outcasts by the shifter clans and were blamed for her mother’s death years earlier.
With Ronan imprisoned, no allies and nowhere else to turn, Christy must learn to trust the people she once viewed as enemies and discover who is really friend or foe. To do that Christy must learn to accept who and what she and discover secrets long buried among the clans if she’s to save Ronan and their future.
Only she can become the true alpha and bring the clans together before it’s too late.

The Alpha’s Curse
Blurb
Christy should be happy now she’s finally with the man she loves, but enemies still cover the island sanctuary that the shifter clans call home. After discovering her brother may still be alive, Christy must go back to the man responsible for killing her family and into the heart of danger.
Now the alpha, she must find a way to stop the people who seeks to destroy all shifters, bring together the clans and the outsiders and stop the centuries old Alpha’s Curse before it can destroy every shifter in existence.

Excerpt from The Alpha’s Daughter by Tiffany Shand for Nadaness In Motion

“You came here because you want answers. Come, let’s begin.” He motioned for her to follow.
Christy glanced around the other room as she followed him inside. Two chairs sat around a circular table with a crystal ball in the centre. The only light came from two candles that cast eerie shadows around the barren room.
She wanted to laugh but she’d seen Magda use such tools before.
Her inner wolf remained silent, not detecting any threat.
She slumped into the chair, sighed. “I don’t know where to begin. I need more than one answer.”
“What is your most pressing question?”
She shook her head. “Is Ronan okay? He’s my boyfriend, well kind of. We’re not supposed to date.” Why am I saying these things to him? Ronan and I never talk about our relationship.
The man closed his eyes. “He’s fine, I sense him searching someone.”
She nodded. Maybe this guy was genuine after all.
“I did something…something by accident. Now he’s trying to clean it up.” She wrung her hands together.
“Give me your hand,” he instructed. She held out her hand. He stared down at her open palm, brow creasing. “You’re very special. Gifted too.”
“That’s the thing. I don’t want to be gifted. I want to be normal,” Christy told him. “I’m tired of people coming after me, of having no control. I want to be human.” The moment the words came out she knew they were true.
“Be careful, those are dangerous words.” His dark eyes flashed in the dim light of the room.
“It’s what I want. The question is how?” She leaned forward.
He stared at her palm. “I sense a curse around people related to you.”
The alpha’s curse. One thing that prevented any shifter from using magic – except her.
It had never affected her, not even being forced to shift into wolf form every month as the curse forced all shifters to do. At every full moon, a shifter’s most powerful time had been something she’d been able to fight too.
“Yes. It doesn’t affect me,” she said. “If you know what I am, how can I end it all?”
His smile widened. “I think I can help with that, princess.”

Last, but certainly not least: Nadaness In Motion's exclusive interview with Tiffany Shand

Nadaness In Motion: If you could meet any author/writer – dead or alive – who would it be and why?
Tiffany Shand: That’s a tough question as I love a lot of authors both dead and alive, but I’d have to say Joanna Penn. She’s one of the most successful indie authors out there and I consider her to be more creative mentoring away because after discovering her blog it set me on the path of becoming an independent author and creative entrepreneur.

NIM: Your books have a cinematic aspect when it comes to writing the action parts, how did you perfect that aspect of your writing?
TS: Wow, thanks! I love writing action scenes, they’re so much fun and one of my favourite things to write and visualize, but sometimes it’s hard getting it all down on paper or computer. But I’ve had a lot of practice over the years, so hopefully that has helped me write great scenes. I do sometimes move around the room and try to visualise certain scenes and how the characters would act to move. In my Amaranthine Chronicles, I had to figure out how and what Kaylan would look like hovering on the ceiling since she could fly. That was a lot of fun!

NIM: If you could time travel, which era (and country) would you go to?
TS: Ooh, I’d love to travel back to sometime in the Middle Ages. I’m a real history buff so I’d love to go back and see what things were like back then. Either that or I’d love to travel a hundred years or so into the future to see what things are like then.

NIM: What is your greatest fear? Have you ever used it in your writing?
TS: Spiders, most definitely spiders. I have tried writing about them in one of my books before, but I couldn’t do it because I was too creeped out.

NIM: Now that you have finished The Amaranthine Chronicles & The Shifter Series, have you decided what else you'll be working on in the future? Can you tell us about your upcoming book(s)?
TS: I’m currently working on the final draft of Denai Storm, the third and final book in my Excalibar Investigations Series which will hopefully be coming out in the next couple of months. After that I’m working on a spin-off to that series featuring a minor character from that series and turning it into an urban fantasy trilogy called the Shadow Walker series. After that, I have two other fantasy series planned out and some more non-fiction books for writers.

NIM: What is your least favourite genre, in terms of reading or writing, and what genre(s) would you like to experiment with in the future?
TS: I think my least favourite genre to write would probably be either a contemporary or erotic romance, I don’t mind reading them but I can’t write them. I love fantasy too much, and I’d get bored after a while! I like mixing genres up a bit which is one good thing you can get away with in the fantasy genre.
I’m planning on writing more non-fiction books for writers, I’ve written two short ones so far about building your author platform and one on writing a business plan for writers. I’m looking forward to writing more non-fiction books and hopefully turning them into online courses. In terms of fiction, I’d like to experiment with either young adult or dystopian fiction or maybe even thrillers.

I've also reviewed Betrayed by Blood, the first book in The Amaranthine Chronicles.

Lady Blackwing, a novella by Devorah Fox – Book Review

Book: Lady Blackwing
Author: Devorah Fox
Publication date: 10 May 2017

"What would she write for her first entry?"
A character study of poor ole Ollie over there? Or, how about that Laundry Room Zombie Apocalypse? Mercedes twirled the pencil, the scene forming in her mind's eye.

Lady Blackwing by Devorah Fox is a 25-page novella about Mercedes, a waitress who likes to write but never finishes a story.

The short novella opens with Roger, a man who wants to write his big story and so buys an extravagant notebook, a brand of pencil known to have been used by John Steinbeck. He sits at a café and orders an espresso "The drink of famous writers who, if they didn't hang out in bars as had Hemingway, hung out in coffeehouses."

Roger gets frustrated by his inability to write a single word and leaves his notebook and pencil on the café table and leaves. Although Roger's accumulation of items used by his favourite authors doesn't do anything for him, they do more than plenty for someone else.

The opening character reminded me of myself, when I want to create the perfect setting to get my writing flowing but nothing actually happens. Writers will easily relate and sympathise to him.

"He failed to understand what was so special about these notebooks and why Hemingway and other writers were so fond of them. His hadn't done a thing for him. His Muse had been AWOL."

After Mercedes writes her first story, she wakes up to discover that it might have been real. As Lady Blackwing progresses, Mercedes slowly begins to write, grow confident and understand what the magical pencil can do.

While there is little imagery in the story, there is character development for Mercedes. The book cover isn't the prettiest but it shouldn't put you off.

I liked how Devorah Fox makes the reader question the paranormal aspect of the novella. I also liked the idea of a story within a story. As we get bits and pieces from Mercedes' short stories. The reader also gets to see how Mercedes, as an author, thinks; how she tries to throw obstacles in her protagonist's way and tries to resolve.

Overall, Lady Blackwing by Devorah Fox is an exciting, quick-paced short novella. Highly recommended.

Author Devorah Fox has revealed that she is currently writing a sequel to Lady Blackwing. I'm curious what else awaits Mercedes in the new adventure.

Overall rating: 4.5 stars

Note: I received a free copy of Lady Blackwing from its author Devorah Fox in exchange for an honest review.

New urban fantasy giveaway for Petra Landon's The Prophecy

Once again, I'm featuring author – now friend – Petra Landon and her urban fantasy SAGA OF THE CHOSEN.

Nadaness In Motion and Petra Landon are coming together as Petra is offering TWO e-book copies of the first instalment in her saga, THE PROPHECY, for grabs in this exclusive giveaway.

Author's Note: The Prophecy is the first book of Saga of the Chosen, an urban fantasy series sprinkled with action, adventure, an unfolding mystery and a dose of romance. The book is set in contemporary San Francisco in the fantastical and intrigue-ridden world of Chosen where factions of Wizards, Shape-shifters, Vampires and others vie for power and influence over their kind.

Synopsis:

A powerful wizard threatens the Chosen from beyond the grave. Can they unravel The Prophecy in time to save their world?
Chosen have walked the earth for time immemorial. Tasia is a very special Chosen. Warned to keep her distance from her brethren, she makes a fateful decision one night to assist an injured Shape-shifter. Suddenly, Tasia finds herself in the cross-hairs of Shifter mercenaries encroaching on San Francisco. Forced out of the shadows, Tasia has little choice but to ally herself with the local Shifter Pack led by a formidable and dangerous Alpha Protector. In the cut-throat world of a Shifter Pack, Tasia must fight to protect her secrets while struggling to negotiate with the enigmatic Alpha who holds his violent Pack together with a ruthless hand on its reins.

Grave danger threatens their world as a powerful wizard exploits an old prophecy to divide the Chosen. When the Pack is asked to investigate the twenty-five-year-old mystery, Tasia is drawn deeper into a past that risks raising the suspicions of the very Chosen she hides from. As danger closes in on her, Tasia must decide who to trust with the deadly secrets she guards.

Nadaness In Motion has also done an exclusive interview with Petra. Below are a few questions and answers to introduce you to the series. You can also check out the full interview and an excerpt from The Prophecy here.

Q: What or who are the "Chosen" in your book series?
PL: The Chosen in my books are Magicks – beings with power who have lived amidst humans since the beginning of time. I do plan one day to explore the origins of the Chosen and how they came to live amongst the humans.
Many of them possess great power and as we all know, with great power comes great responsibility. Unfortunately, the Chosen continue to be divided by rifts and factionalism, some centuries old. They agree on one law – that no Chosen can ever allow the secret of their existence to be revealed to the humans. They call this their Supreme Edict and their leaders enforce this under the penalty of death. There have been many attempts to foster greater co-operation between them, the last attempt twenty years ago before the story of Saga of the Chosen begins.
A Council of Chosen was formed with four seats to represent the four main Chosen factions. The Council has helped open communications between the leaders of factions but not much has changed at the grass roots level. The story explores what happens when one of their own - a powerful wizard - threatens to exploit the schisms between the Chosen for her own ambitions. When the Chosen slowly awaken to the danger that threatens their kind, can they forget centuries of animosity to come together to face this threat or will she succeed in driving a deeper wedge between them?
Although set in a fantasy world, it is a story that we see play out in the real world so often. Quite depressingly so, in my opinion. I’ve always found it fascinating how different people react to the same life-changing event. Some are willing to let go of their life-long beliefs to come together for a common good while others tend to cling to their dogma stubbornly.

Q: You have many species in your novel, did you have them in mind from the start or did you add some as the story progressed?
PL: The fantasy world was very clear and vivid in my imagination when I started writing the story, down to the last detail. The world and the characters that populate it are very integral to this story since the different factions of Chosen and their historic inter-dependence and conflicting ties and loyalties to each other play a crucial role in how this particular tale plays out. Some are willing to join hands with their enemies to work towards the betterment of their brethren while others are bamboozled into allowing their greed to override their better judgement. As the story progresses, some factions paper over their internal differences to present a united front while others are torn apart by the differing philosophies within the group, leading to the weaker members being vulnerable as a high-stakes grab for power and influence over the Chosen world commences.
There are four main factions within the Chosen, each with a distinct history and set of beliefs. The wizards are arrogant and look down on other Chosen, except the Ancients whom they idolise and try to emulate. The vampires, considered an abomination by many Chosen, are obsessed with social hierarchy and isolate themselves from the mainstream. The Shifters share much with their beast forms at an elemental level – territorial, aggressive and loners except when it comes to their Packs. They have little magic but their physical abilities make them a force to reckon with. The Ancients are believed to be the descendants of the first Chosen to walk the earth and possess the most diverse set of powers.
The story begins with an incident in San Francisco when Tasia, a Chosen with secrets that force her to hide from her kind, finds herself in the cross-hairs of rogue Chosen encroaching on the city. When the local Shifter Pack, vampire nest and wizards get involved in the messy but mysterious affair, Tasia is forced to accept the Pack’s hospitality. Now, she must fight to guard her deadly secrets, navigate the politics in the Pack and negotiate with the Alpha Protector who is the only one standing between her and the wolves circling her. When the Pack gets involved in investigating an old prophecy, she’s drawn into the past. Tasia must decide whether to help unravel the threat or guard her own secrets. In essence, the larger story of the Chosen interweaves through Tasia’s journey as she goes from a Chosen more at ease in the human world to someone at the center of this investigation that might well change the course of Chosen history.

Q: You've mentioned that this is a Saga not a trilogy or Quartet, so how many parts do you have planned? And how much have you written so far?
Petra Landon: When the idea for the story first came to me, I envisioned the story as a trilogy. I’m not giving much of the story away by saying that the prophecy in the tale centers around three siblings. The idea was that each book would tell one sibling’s story and how that tied in to the larger tale of the Chosen. Most of the world and main characters were very clear in my head before I started to put it down on paper. But once I started writing The Prophecy, I realised that my inexperience had led me to underestimate an important aspect of the story. The world building in the story is quite detailed and very essential to why the characters react the way they do to various events that affect their world. The Prophecy is a little over 400 pages and that is already at the upper end of what I had envisioned for Book 1.

As a reader, I love long books myself but now that I’m on the other side, I realise that the writer must work extra hard to hold the reader’s interest and keep the story taut in such cases. That is why I’ve been very careful to not call Saga of the Chosen a trilogy because I’m not sure yet how many books the story will take to tell it the way I had originally envisioned it.
In the future, I also plan to write stories with some of the secondary characters from Saga of the Chosen and shorter standalone stories set in this universe.
To answer your second question, I have 80% of Book 2 (The Rainmaker) written as a draft. I’m toying with the idea of releasing some of it as short standalone addendums to keep The Rainmaker to a more reasonable length.
