Thirst: Blood of My Blood by RP Channing - excerpt & interview

Today, I'm featuring author RP Channing and his novel Blood of My Blood through an excerpt and short author interview.

The book definitely looks interesting and I absolutely love the cover – which we cover in the interview ;)

Book: Blood of My Blood
Author: RP Channing
Genres: Young Adult Romance, Paranormal Romance, High School, Vampires, Demons, Witches, Dark Fantasy, Horror
Publication date: 26 November, 2015
Book length: 243 pages + beautiful photographs

Blurb:
~ Kira Sutherland ~

After a near fatal accident (and getting cheated on by her 'boyfriend'), and beating up the lead cheerleader (with whom the boyfriend cheated...), and being labeled as having 'issues' in her school because she, uhm, sees ghosts, Kira is left with two choices:

1. Continue her 'therapy' (where she's told the ghost is a hallucination and also gets her legs ogled too often...)
Or
2. Go to Starkfield Academy, a boarding school for "Crazies and Convicts" (as the social media sites call them.)
She chooses the latter...

~ Cory Rand ~

Cory Rand has not had an easy life. His mother died in a car accident when he was twelve, and so did his mother's best friend...sort of. You see, Janice made a promise to take care of Cory just before she died, and so she lingers. Undead. A ghost that watches out for him.
Brought up in an abusive home, Cory quickly falls into a life of disreputable behavior. After his third offense (which was prompted by a girl, as usual - he has a weakness) he's left with two choices:

1. Be tried as an adult and share a cell with a guy named Bubba (he thinks...)
Or
2. Go to Starkfield Academy, which Cory is pretty sure is run by vampires. But, hey, at least he'll get an education.
He chooses the latter...

It's at Starkfield that Kira meets Cory Rand, a boy with an insatiable Rage who sees ghosts, too. As well as other things, other things from his past, things that confuse him, things like fire and witches and demons.
Things he's always ignored.
Until now.

The Puppy Eyes

My life was perfect.
I had the perfect shoes and the perfect friends and I lived in the perfect house. My nails were perfect and my hair was perfect (except on Sundays, it was always windy on Sundays) and I had the perfect clothes. My lips were a perfect red and my hair perfectly straight. My eyeshadow was perfect, my hips were...okay, and my waist...well...also okay. Nothing was wrong in my life.
But then there was Jack.
Jack was a problem.
He needed to go. I mean, when you’re dead, you’re dead! I had told him this endlessly. Somehow, Jack didn’t get it. I mean, I felt sorry for the guy. Sure. Being stuck between this life and the next. But just because I found him, does that mean I needed to keep him?
I think not!
Sadly, when Jack got that look in his eyes, that weary, almost teary (if his tear-ducts worked) look, I melted. I just couldn’t send him away. Not even Jack knew where he would go after he died.
Would he, like, die? As in — dead, nada, kaput, finito, gone, no more? Bye bye, sayonara, ciao, hasta la vista baby and all that?
I couldn’t have that on my conscience. No way.
I lay on my bed, wondering what to do about him. “Jaaaaaaack,” I hollered.
“Jaaaaaaack!”
Still no answer.
“Jack!”
Jack...materialized.
His eyes rolled down to the ground. He was making those puppy eyes again. “Jack, I told you not to do that. I told you not to play on my sympathies.”
His puppy eyes became worse.
His skin was gray and, well, dead.
“Oh, brother,” I said. “I have to do something about you. If mom finds out I have another ‘imaginary friend’ — at my age — well, I’d die of embarrassment. But, like, really die. Not like you.” I wondered about this. Would I die? Was Jack a freak accident, or did all people live on like him? Think of the cemeteries...
The idea excited me somewhat.
What would you have me do, Miss Kira?
“Knock off the Miss Kira crap. I told you it’s just Kira.”
Yes, Miss Kira.
The dead. There’s just no reasoning.
“Fine, Miss Kira it is then.” Rover barked like a lunatic in the garden. No one else might be able to see Jack, but I was sure my dog could.
“I have to do something about this,” I mumbled.

The Rat

Mike knocked on the door before I had time to leave the house. Mike was the guy I thought (at the time) was perfect.
“Who is it?”
“It’s me, baby.”
Baby, urgh — I wasn’t his baby. I dated Mike because he was the quarterback, because girls are supposed to like the quarterback, because it’s just so darn perfect to be seen with the quarterback, like we’re brainwashed into thinking these things from the first romantic doll set mom buys us.
This was my previous life.
“Mike.”
“Uh-huh. Gonna let me in?”
So you can try rub me up and then complain when I don’t let you? This, dear reader, was the big problem with Mike. The second we first kissed, his hand went way too far south for me to be comfortable — and I pulled back.
Mike suddenly wasn’t so perfect.
“Uhm, I was just on my way out,” I said.
“Kira? C’mon, open the door.” He sounded upset. “Is there someone in there with you?”
Boys. As if.
I didn’t know much about love (nothing, actually) but I knew this wasn’t it.
“Uhm, now’s not the time, Mike.”
“C’mon, Kira, what’s going on?” He banged harder.
When in doubt...lie. I opened the door a crack. “There’s a dead rat in the house, Mike. Been here for days. I gotta go get some detergent and stuff to handle the stench.”
Mike stepped back. He peered through the crack of the door.
“It’s really bad,” I said.
“I’ll drive you.”
“I’m afraid the smell” — I stuck my armpit to my nose — “has found its way all over me. I’ll drive myself.”
“O — okay. Fine.” And then he grinned like he wanted something. “Later? My place?”
Urgh. “Uhm, sure...er...later. Not sure when though.”
“Six.”
I fought the urge to roll my eyes. According to girls at school, he was apparently so damn good looking — theoretically. But for me personally, he did nothing. Moved nothing. Twisted nothing. “Look, I gotta go, Mike. I gotta — ”
“Kira.” His eyes grew stern. “You’ve been avoiding me...”
Bingo! Well done contestant number one! And what have you won? A brain!
I tilted my head. “Mike, look, this...rat — I need to deal with it. We’ll talk later, okay? Bye.” I closed the door, not waiting for an answer, and peered out the peep hole. Mike hung around for a second, shoulders wide and eyes glaring straight at me through the door. Could he see me? Did he know I was looking at him?
He kicked something off the ground, and I had the distinct impression he mouthed the word Bitch before leaving. But I wasn’t sure...

The Mack

“Roll down the window, Jack.” Jack was recently dead, so he still had a smell about him. (Which only I could smell...)
I had purposely skipped breakfast. Maybe Jack would help me lose weight. I was (still am) a little wide, although it had never stopped guys flirting with me. I know how to dress.
But I could be skinnier.
Lucy Rogers was skinny. All bones and no boobs.
Charlene Carverton was a babe. Cheerleader. Big chest (which she pushed out generously with a push-up — if only guys knew). Toned thighs. Charlene only dated college boys (back then), which I still think is pretty gross for a girl her age.
He’s not for you,” Jack said out the blue.
“Hmm?”
This...Mike — he’s wrong for you, Miss Kira.” For all Jack’s faults (mainly, being dead), he has a good heart. Factually, probably it’s why I kept him around at first.
“You think I don’t know that?”
Then why don’t you dump him?
I braked at a stop sign. Looked left and right. “Because I’d look like an idiot. I flirted with him and showed interest, and one kiss later I can’t stand the sight of him.”
So dump him.
“It’s not that simple. Kids at school — they can be vicious. I have to let it fade slowly. If I drop the bomb on him, I’ll never hear the end of it through senior year.”
“And you care?”
Yes, I did. Forget Guantanamo, schools are rough. “You don’t understand, Jack. Maybe school was different in your day. But in mine, well, we walk through metal detectors.”
Schools weren’t too different in my day.” I noted the sadness in his voice.
“You okay?”
I’m dead.
Right. “You miss...your life?”
Jack shrugged. “I like being with you, Miss Kira. And I don’t remember much of my life. I think I’m in limbo.
“Limbo?”
Yes, like I have some unfinished business. If only I could remember...what...it is...” He scratched his head.
“Any ideas?”
Well, it can’t be love. If it were love, I’d be a vampire. That’s who teenage girls fall in love with these days.”
“A vampire? That’s just what I need — two undead beings stalking me.”
I feel I have something to do around you, Miss Kira. I don’t know what, but something. Something important.
I looked over at him. “Me?”
I was still looking at him when I missed the stop sign.
The Mack truck drove straight into us.

Nadaness In Motion's author interview about the book

Q: Is this a standalone novel or the first in a series? If it were a series, how many parts are you planning for it?
RP Channing: This is a standalone. There is room for more in the story but I haven't decided if I will continue it, or if I'll release a different story altogether next.
I hate dragging things out in my tales. Right now, the story is concluded, but there is space for more. I'll see how it goes and make a call sometime later.

Q: If the novel is about Kira and Cory, why does the cover feature only one of them?
RP: Well, cover design is a tricky business. LOL. Kira also had black hair throughout the novel...but a brunette didn't go well with the background and so, at the last minute, she became a redhead. Also, Kira's story is the main aspect of the book, so she gets to be up front in lights J

Q: What is your favourite thing/aspect about your two main characters?
RP: Kira is extremely powerful, only she doesn't know it. She grows throughout the story and becomes something magnificent towards the end.
Cory has a dark part to him which even he doesn't understand. It's really what brings him and Kira together in the first place.

Metamorphosis comes in several forms - Book Review

Book: Metamorphosis
Book II of the Lalassu
Author: Jennifer Carole Lewis
Genres: Romance, Adult, Paranormal
Publication date: 14 February, 2016

Metamorphosis by Jennifer Carole Lewis is the second instalment in the Lalassu series. While the beginning doesn't seem to start where the other left off, it is a fair continuation of the events of the novel.

While I feel that most of the book can be read as a standalone, I think reading the first part – Revelations - will make the reader guess the identity of certain characters, some events, connections (some of which will be right, others not) and connect the dots better than someone starting with this book.

The book is divided into five parts named after stages of healing a wound. I liked that, especially when moving forward with the book, the reader realises that there is a lot of progress and healing required by many of the characters.

"Living in the past doesn't change it. It only destroys the present."

Metamorphosis opens with former army corporal Ron McBride escaping from his captors and freezing in the Canadian wilderness. He carries the ashes of Nada, whom he was unable to save in the last book and hopes to give them to her family in a place called "Ekurru".

Almost frozen in the cold, Ron wakes up in Doc's cabin, where he meets his rescuers. Ron worries that his former captors would catch up with him or worse harm those who have come to slightly welcome him in this place, which he later discovers is home to highly intelligent massive-sized bears.

"The warmth hit him like truck, sparking an irrational temptation to crawl directly into the tiny fire to thaw his frozen body."

The book focuses on both Ron and Lily, whom Ron immediately falls in love with, and the metamorphosis of each of them; a psychological and emotional transformation for one and literal and physical for the other.

The theme of the hero remerges in Metamorphosis, where the former corporal has always wanted to be a hero; however, in one of his tours, he believes he failed his friends, who died, while he lived. The novel portrays Ron's constant struggle to be a better – advanced - human being as well as his attempts to be worthy of Lily.

While I understand the need to stress on Ron's problems and inward struggle, I still felt that it was too much at times, or becoming a bit repetitive.

The Lalassu are people born with supernatural powers. In Metamorphosis, we are given additional information and background on them. Lily and her family are Lalassu but also called skinwalkers, since they have the ability to transform into bears.

I enjoyed the use of psychology with the characters of Ron and Vincent, especially since the two characters are similar in several aspects, particularly being controlled by A.D., whose touch renders his victims his slaves.

We also see how Lily's brother and grandfather try to break A.D.'s hold on both Ron and Vincent, a hold that makes it impossible for them to speak or even hear their captor's name.

Several characters from Revelations make a reappearance in Metamorphosis with backgrounds on many of them, including Karan, who is best described here:
"Most people were too lazy to look past what they wanted to see and Karan had no problem with taking advantage of that."

"Karan never lost, no matter how long it took to achieve his victory."

I felt the chapters were too long, and thought they'd be quicker if they were shorter, since each chapter already covers several places or sides in the novel.

Ron's interactions – as well as those of the other characters later on - with the bears were rather cute. Ron's – and the reader's – first encounter with a bear in the book goes like this:
'"Good bear. Nice bear," he croacked.
The bear's ears went flat against its skull, exactly like an annoyed cat. It snorted and shook its head.'

Artful humour is prevalent in the novel to break the tension. An important aspect often forgotten or overlooked by writers.
"Your head is spinning fast enough to qualify for Exorcist Frequent Flier miles."

One of the most important aspects in the novel for me is character development. I was glad to see the development of several characters not just the protagonists. *applause for the author*

Metamorphosis is a novel of romance and journey of maturity and self-discovery, and it's full of beautiful quotes and imagery. I look forward to reading more in the series.

"It's easier to believe you are broken than to try and heal yourself."

Note: I got an advanced readers' copy (ARC) of Metamorphosis from author Jennifer Carole Lewis in exchange for an honest review.

Author Dylan Peters pays tribute to his dog in his novel The Dean Machine

Today, I'm featuring author Dylan Lee Peters. His book The Dean Machine was inspired by his – late - dog, Dean.

Dylan has pledged to donate a portion of his royalties from The Dean Machine to animal rescue shelters for as long as the book is in publication.
"This is how I plan to honor Dean’s memory. I have an area set up for The Dean Machine with the preface of the book (which explains my relationship with Dean and why I was inspired to write [the book], a sample chapter, book artwork, and pictures and video of the real Dean (he was a very cute old man)."

The Dean Machine
By: Dylan Lee Peters
Publication Date: 3 December 2015
Genres/themes: Animals, Adventure, Other world

Blurb:

Meet Dan Delacor, an utterly boring citizen of Yellow City. Every day he puts on his yellow shoes, yellow shirt, yellow pants, and yellow tie, and catches a ride on the Tunnel Runner from the suburbs into downtown. He has a job, a home, and a girlfriend, and he never wonders what waits beyond the giant glass wall that surrounds Yellow City.
Except… Dan isn’t as boring as he seems. He often wonders why everything in Yellow City has to be yellow. He wonders why he suffers frequent anxiety attacks, and why he can’t help himself from strolling through dangerous neighborhoods, or running wildly through the fields that separate downtown from the suburbs. Mostly though, Dan wonders why he can’t remember how he lost his right arm, or anything that happened before five years ago.
So, when Dan’s mundane yellow world is interrupted with the seemingly impossible presence of a little red dog named Dean, he quickly finds out there are answers to his questions, and that everything he knows is a lie.
Follow Dan as he learns the secrets of his true identity, the scope of the world beyond the wall, and the true intentions of Yellow City’s mysterious leader, Chancellor Elgrey Vinsidian. Meet Wendy, the twelve-year-old girl on a rescue mission, Echo Valkzdokker, the woman with a love for danger, James Perkins, the wily pilot who has a way with words, and Bianna Kensington, the cold-mannered rebel with a cause. Look through the cracks of this new world with Dan as he learns why his little friend is nicknamed The Dean Machine, what special bond they share, and why the dog deserves a legacy that should live on forever.

He lives to love.
He would die to protect.
His heart is a machine.

Excerpt from The Dean Machine

A red dog? Dan wondered with a modicum of shock. He couldn’t remember the last time he had seen a dog that wasn’t a Golden Retriever. Not that Dan could remember much, but it was enough of an oddity that he couldn’t help staring at the girl and her dog. The dog was very small, probably somewhere around ten pounds, and the majority of its fur was red, with the exception of its white paws, some white in its tail, and an aged, white face. The brown-haired girl was on her hands and knees, slapping at the ground in front of it, mimicking the actions of a playful dog, and her pet was eating it up. It bounced from one side to the other, putting its chest on the ground and wagging its feathered tail in the air.
The old dog has spirit, Dan laughed to himself as the little dog gave a playful bark and ran three circles around the girl. It had large ears that stood straight up, and each one bore tufts of long red hair that caught the wind as it ran. Another five laps around the young girl, and the dog was winded. It stood panting, its big brown nose bobbing up and down, and the young girl smiled at it lovingly.
“Had enough?” she teased. The dog continued to pant with its mouth wide. It looked as if it were smiling. “Okay, let’s go home.” The girl scooped the little dog up in her arms, and it licked her face affectionately. “I love you, too.”
Dan smiled and turned to continue his walk to the medical sector, knowing he had made the right decision to forego the Tunnel Runner. There was something about Arbor Slum that always reminded Dan that life was worth it. No matter how short the feeling lasted and no matter how his mundane life ran him back and forth through the same rut over and over like logs through a mill, Arbor Slum gave him a feeling to be valued. He watched the sun as it continued to set and wished the moment could last.

Guest post & spotlight for adult romance novel Debt by Rachel Dunning

Today, I'm hosting author Rachel Dunning and her upcoming adult sports-romance novel Debt.

Book title: Debt
By: Rachel Dunning
Expected date of publication: March 2016
Genres: New-Adult Romance, Sports Romance

Content Warning: Not intended for readers under the age of seventeen.

 Synopsis:

The Debt Collector
I pay my debts, and I expect others to.
I was raised in the slums of London, I knew nothing of privilege. My father was murdered when I was seventeen. Morty figured my father's passing meant I would automatically take on dad's debts. I refused.
And I paid for that refusal.
So did my sister.
So now I fight. All I know how to do is fight. The best cash is in the states, so that's where I am now. A big fish called Vito came along offering me a "favor" when I arrived.
Another debt.
I paid for that one too.
I knew Kyla Hensley would be trouble when I met her. But I wanted her. I could see through the falsehood of her wannabe-slutty clothes and her sexy legs. So I chased her.
Besides, trouble is my middle name.

Kyla Hensley

I was brought up in privilege, but I lacked everything else. My father is a business tycoon who buys and sells and doesn't care who gets rolled over in the process.

I never knew my mother, and all I have of her is a photo with a note scrawled on the back in French saying "I'm sorry." The only Female Figure I had growing up is my dad's wife who is a bleach blond with seven boob jobs. We never bonded.
I drink. I party. I meet guys.
But I wasn't always like that.
I've had a string of lovers in the last few years, the worst and most recent of which was Vince Somerset. My best friend Vera was dating a guy called Rory Cansoom who is the opposite of Vince in so many ways, and yet so the same.
She and I hit the road for the summer, getting away from the two college psychos and just trying to have some fun.
But there's a funny thing about trouble, the more you run from it, the more it finds you.
Which is when I met the Debt Collector.
It was only supposed to be sex. He made that clear. I made that clear.
That's all it was supposed to be.
I never expected to fall in love. I never expected to fall so deeply, madly, uncomfortably in love with a man who is wrong, so wrong for me.
And yet...so unbelievably right.

10 Random Things about Debt
By: Rachel Dunning

1.      The story takes place in several locations around the USA as well as in London. I have been to many of those places.
2.     The town in Florida where some of it takes place is fictional, but based off several places I visited when I was there.
3.     The “Debt Collector’s” real name is Logan.
4.     Logan’s best friend is a female.
5.     Kyla Hensley (the female lead) is studying accountancy at WRU
6.    WRU is also fictional.
7.     Logan’s business partner (occurs later in the book) is a specialist in a martial art called Silat.
8.     Logan hates debts of any kind, which stems from what happened to his parents (I won’t give anything away... ;) )
9.     Kyla drives a small Toyota.
10. Logan’s sister’s name is Ailee. The reason he fights is to keep her in college. She doesn’t know he’s a fighter.

Two Excerpts from Debt

~Kyla~

I push my head back against the wall, not sure what’s coming, but not fighting it either.
“Who are you?” he repeats.
“I...I don’t know what you mean.”
“I see you at a bar in Texas, then I look for you all over Nashville. And suddenly you’re at my side in a hospital, following me into this warehouse. Who are you?”
“I didn’t follow you into the warehouse. You needed to pick up your truck, and you were stumbling.”
“So?”
“So I wanted to make sure you were OK.”
“And?”
And I want you to take my clothes off and I want us to live happily ever after. “That’s it.”
Logan grins, a deadly look for him with his dimples. “Don’t do that,” I say.
“What?”
“Smile.”
“Why not?”
Because you’re beautiful. “Just don’t.”

~Logan~

I have no desire to settle down.
I have no desire to make Kyla be the last woman I’m ever with.
But, damn it, I’d like to be given a chance to do those things. Does she even feel anything for me?
I know I do.
I feel something.
Not love. Something else.
Like I need her.
Like I’d stop breathing without her.
Like the sun would stop being so bright or the sounds of the world so sweet if she disappeared.

Twice Upon a Time: A Valentine's Day Giveaway

Welcome to the second giveaway of 2016. This one is a Valentine's Day special with magic, a love between a Welsh monk and witch, time travel and lots of fun.

Join me in welcoming author Hope Irving once more on the blog. Today, she is giving away FIVE ebook copies of her paranormal romance novel Twice Upon a Time, the first installment in The Black Angel Book series.

Below you will find the synopsis, cover and excerpt from the novel as well as the rafflecopter giveaway.

Twice Upon A Time
(The Black Angel Book, #1)
By: Hope Irving
Genres: Romance, Fantasy, Paranormal, New Adult
Publication date: 31 October 2015

Synopsis
Once upon a time, there was the wandering soul of Morgann, an 8th century Irish calligrapher-monk longing to be reunited with his soul mate. Deirdre was his forbidden love, a witch with whom he wrote a coveted book.

Under her spell, the souls of the star-crossed lovers travel from bodies to bodies until they find each other. Eventually.

That became his quest: unearth her new body and trigger her memory, for she is clueless about whom she once was. Unfortunately their story didn't get a chance to become a fairy tale yet it still turned out as a famous urban legend referred as The Black Angel Book.

Twice upon a time, not so long ago, there was me, rational and devastated Rose. I needed to get a grip, said my French mum after my year of numbness due to a painful break-up that led me to cut my wrist daily, to feel something, anything.
So she sent me off to the free-spirited village of Provincetown, Massachusetts, to spend the summer with my American relatives. And just like that, I wasn’t myself any longer. Because someone pulled me out of the darkness and bewitched me, somehow.

I couldn’t wait to jump his bones… but why was he holding back?
He couldn’t wait to welcome me into his world… but was I ready to question my convictions and acknowledge that my self-inflicted cuts were now healing in record time?

How could I have imagined he was longing for his own unorthodox fairytale to come true?
Frantically.

Excerpt from Twice Upon a Time

Nothing would ever be the same now that I finally fathomed what true desire was and who could fulfill my craving.
Maybe I felt it yesterday but couldn’t quite put it into words. I wouldn’t bet on it though since the electricity wasn’t there. To be honest, it did exist, I had noticed it before, but mistaken for something else, or perhaps part of me was rebelling against that urge.
Let’s say on a scale from one to ten, my feelings for my French ex were a one compared to yesterday’s feelings towards the man I now desired the most ranked as a solid four— the closeness, the laughs, the fun, the understanding—when today I’d say it ranked way above twenty.
I knew what changed: above all, I couldn’t stand to be next to him without wanting to touch him, wanting him to kiss me feverishly, wanting him, period. I liked that extent.
How fast it grew, I couldn’t figure it out; I hadn’t seen it coming. It just happened. One minute I entered the room, saw him and there was nothing else but him. What I felt surpassed everything I had lived or learned from past experiences.
There was no point in either denying or fighting it.
Truth was, for the first time in my life I was irrevocably drawn to someone with no means of control over my feelings, someone who wasn’t my type, either. The pace to which it had grown as well as the feeling itself, both were beyond my own comprehension. I yearned for his hands on my body and mine on his. My need and my goal were to jump his bones, here and now.
Was he also feeling the same chemistry? Was that even possible to have chemistry without a mutual attraction, I doubted it. I had to make sure. I didn’t comprehend if my mind and my body were sending signals completely out of reality or if it was, in fact, real.
Lost in my lustful thoughts, pretending to practice calligraphy, I was reaching for the ink on display as the back of his hand grazed mine. And just like that, I knew. The chemistry. His altered breathing on my skin. His sensitive skin against mine. The electricity.
He felt it, too, I sensed it. One micro touch sufficed.
All true. Definitely not yesterday’s touch but what changed? It sent shivers down my spine. Animal instinct. That was what that was.

I was such a baby before. I thought I understood it all; I understood zilch.

Excerpt #2

“If she is the one, she has no memory of us, whatsoever. I can’t force that on her, that wouldn’t be fair, would it? Because if I end up telling her the truth, she’ll think I’m a lunatic. And if she starts to believe part of it, she’s gonna think she was doomed because of an ancient spell or something.”
