While T.S. Eliot believed April was "the cruelest month" I think we can all beg to differ as we shed of the cold months and venture into some warmth. Hmmm?

And for this occasion of warmth and freedom, I'm featuring artwork (inspired by an original image) from my friend Mona Morsy.

Welcome the month of love and romance, or as many people in Egypt believe… a short month that's heavy on the heart and an overall bad omen and experience… I don't know about you but that sounds like the premises for dark romance writing or horror pieces.

Takhayyal Writing Prompt 86: Raging Sea

I was a bit stumped with what to post for June, the first month of summer for a lot of schools here, although I must note that sweltering heat has already started here (Egypt). We had a couple of 40-Celsius weeks already and they call it spring!

Anyways, this is an image I took last year of the Mediterranean Sea towards the end of the season. The sea had gnawed at the rocks and it was impossible to swim at this point.

I hope you find inspiration in this sea as it has inspired me year after year.

Takhayyal writing prompt 84: Keeper of the Caves

A quick note before getting to the prompt:

Starting April, the prompt will be monthly instead of every two weeks. This is for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to marketing the prompt online, finding new images that fit the style of the blog and the people who follow it, finding something that's actually inspiring, and being able to keep up with the two-week thing; sometimes I personally feel like "It's been two weeks? But I haven't written for the previous one yet!"

So with April's prompt, begins the Monthly Takhayyal/Imagine Writing Prompts.

Picture prompts will be posted on the first Thursday of each month.

A Boom of Blue by Nada Adel Sobhi - Flash Fiction

BOOM!

The sound jolts my mind from the multitude of swirling thoughts within. I open my eyes to a background of blue. The smoke surprises me. Is it lethal? Am I going to die?

And yet, there is something kind about it. Soothing even.

I hear people screaming. Several run in my periphery but my eyes are entranced by the ever-growing flower of blue before me.

I grab onto the bench for support. My legs beg me to rise and investigate, but my hammering heart tells me to hold still, sit a moment longer and enjoy the blue.

The yelling fades. I don't know if everyone has run away and left me alone – not that I could complain – or if the smoke has some deafening effect, not complaining about that either.

The bursting blue transfixes me and yet it calls to me. I'm moving! My legs walk of their own accord. They haven't asked my brain for permission. Is that normal?

The blue is growing bigger or is it because I'm the one moving closer?

I stand at the mere edge of the alluring color. It is opaque. I see nothing beside or beyond it.

My hand, too, moves without asking my mind about its next step. It touches the blue smoke and for a moment nothing happens.

Then it engulfs me!

I don't scream or cry. I close my eyes and breathe, bracing myself for the possible end.

Something soft touches my cheek. I open my eyes. It is an old man with eyes as blue as the breathtaking flower of smoke. Time stands still. Then he smiles.

"You are brave," he says.

I wonder if that is true.

He hands me gift box.

I wonder if this some kind of Pandora's box, but as I run my hand over it. Something tells me it is far stronger and more beautiful.

"For the artist and warrior within," he explains.

At first I wasn't sure about the image below but then I felt it was soooo artistic, it must be capable of inspiring people. The colours are simple - and few - but stunning.

I just had to use it.
